Solar pond lights. Submersible pond lights. Floating pond lights

Add some lights in and around the pond
You most likely did spend a fair amount of time and effort in creating that "one-of-kind" backyard pond. The sound of falling water and properly placed lights makes for a relaxing setting for you and your friends. Do not install too many lights but keep it 'hushed' to create the right atmosphere. I would suggest to place a few floating lights between the greenery or water lilies. Submersible light can look stunning as long as they are not too powerful. A spotlight trained on running water is always a good idea. If there are trees nearby you may want to install some spotlight at the base of the tree for uplighting.

WARNING
Make sure to provide a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet near the pond. Any wiring from the power source to this outlet should run through a conduit.

Adding pond lights not only adds beauty to what you have created it also can provide a warm and relaxing feeling that lasts well into the evening. As is the case with so many products, not all pond lights are created equal. They come in different wattages, colours, are stationary or can be swiveled. Lights can be placed to accent a waterfall, fountain, plants, fish or rock wall. Some lights can only be used around the pond, some are submersible and some can be used both, in and out of the water. Floating light are also popular and so are coloured underwater pond lights.

Floating pond lights

Here is a brief overview of what is available:
1- Solar pond lights. Save on electricity. Maintenance for these lights is basically the same as for the standard garden solar lights. Batteries will have to be replaced every two or three years.
2- Submersible pond light can turn even a simple small pond into an attractive piece of landscaping. These lights should be properly secured to prevent them from sinking to the bottom. Depending on the depth of your pond, you should get at least 35 to 75 watt bulbs. Deeper ponds require higher wattage. Most underwater lights use 12 volt halogen lamps. A transformer is required.
3- Floating pond lights are a nice addition to any pool. Since they float on the surface they don't have to be very powerful.
Most low-voltage lights use only 5 watt bulbs. Floating pond lights can be very effective when placed among pond plants. Each light has it's own low-voltage cable. They are all connected to a transformer.
4- Rock lights look, preferably, like a rock and are designed to blend in with the landscape. They are usually low voltage and come with a long cable.
