The thermal resistance (or RSI) value of insulation is a measure of a material's ability to resists heat flow. The higher the R value, the better the material insulates.

The RSI value of the insulation is set by local codes and varies from area to area. Before starting any repairs, remodeling or retrofitting involving insulation check with your local building department. Any moist, damp or wet insulation, has to be replaced as water damaged insulation is no longer effective.



WARNING. All styrofoam (or ridged board) insulation is a fire hazard if not properly protected by non-combustible materials such as drywall.

Insulation can be added by dropping the ceiling, as illustrated. This is only possible if there is enough headroom left after the ceiling has been lowered. The space between the ceiling joists should stay open to allow adequate airflow and ventilation to the continuous soffit vents. Vents should be located as close as possible to the roof's edge or fascia.
Only continuous vents should be used for flat roof constructions.
