You should check the gate, and specifically the gate hardware, at least once a year. A builder or contractor should be called if there are signs of misalignment of the locking hardware or gate sagging within the first few years after installation.
Misalignment of locking devices could lead to gates not properly locking, defeating the very purpose of a gate which is to keep unwanted people and animals out or your children and pets in. Misalignment can also be caused by undersized gate hardware, wear and tear of the hinges, gate sagging or, in the worst scenario, improperly installed hinge posts.
Rust. All metal parts should be checked for early signs of rust and be treated to prevent further damage. If the rust is well advanced the parts should be replaced immediately.
Safety gate latches for pool fencing should be checked several times a year and adjusted or, if necessary, be replaced to prevent serious accidents from happening.
