Are outdoor fireplaces legal?
Before you add a fireplace to your patio check with your local municipality if they are legal or if a permit is required. The following has been copied from the City of Burlington Ontario website.
"Open air burning is not permitted in the urban area of Burlington (South of Dundas Street / HWY 407), open air burning permits will not be issued for this area. The use of fireplaces that do not meet the regulations for outdoor wood stoves is considered open air burning. An open air burning permit is required. The City of Burlington also has the ability to charge a fine for cost recovery of Fire Department responses to a residence where the activity has not been approved by the Fire Department"

In most municipalities natural gas or propane fired fireplaces are permitted.

If you like to listen to the crackling of burning wood in a fireplace during the cold winter months why not build one outdoors, right? Masonry fireplaces can be bought as a relative inexpensive kit or build to specs by a masonry fireplace contractor. I guess it all depends on what you like, how much time you will be spending outside, finances and the size of your patio.
The construction of an outdoor fireplace is basically the same as that of an indoor fireplace. It often consists of footings, a firebox and a chimney.
An outdoor fireplace is usually added to a stone, brick, or concrete patio. Masonry materials which are used to construct outdoor fireplaces include: marble, natural stone, bricks, stone, volcanic pumice and natural sandstone.
Outdoor fireplace kits
It is relatively easy to build your own outdoor fireplace. No specialized skills are required to assemble the fireplace kit and they are a lot cheaper than an on-site built brick and mortar fireplace. These kits can be customized with different stone facings. The units can be relocated. Outdoor cooking is usually not recommended for fireplace kit units.
Just a fireplace?
An outdoor fireplace can be very decorative while at the same time allows homeowners to enjoy a crackling fire while entertaining in the backyard.
While indoor fireplaces are traditionally designed for heating, an outdoor fireplace is usually used for cooking. Many are designed to double as wood-fired ovens that allow homeowners to create meals such as pizzas and casseroles.
As with indoor fireplaces, an outdoor fireplace requires cleaning and maintenance to keep it looking and working at its best. While an outdoor fireplace may not need to be cleaned as often, it will need to be cleaned regularly.

This massive outdoor fireplace blends in with the poured concrete, pebble finished patio. It is strictly used as a fireplace and is not equipped with a grill for outdoor cooking
