Some municipalities require a building permit so check with your local building department. There also may be square footage and height restrictions.

A wooden shed is the most practical type as it can be built for a specific use such as a small workshop or hobby shed. Workbench, window(s) and electrical service can be installed as required. Also, the size of a wooden shed can be custom made to fit the space available. The shed beside my house is a bike/garden shed. It measures 5'x16' for a total of 80 square feet. It has a sliding barn style door so it is easy to "park" the bike(s) in the first section. The rest of the shed is used to store garden equipment. It also has a workbench which comes in handy at times.
Despite the strength of wood, over time it can rot, split, warp or become susceptible to mold and mildew, so wood sheds should be painted, stained or treated on a regular base with a water-repellent sealer for protection. Don't forget to add a ventilation system if the swimming pool heater is located in the shed.
One advantage of using wood sheds is that it is easy to modify. The shed can be "spruced up" by adding windows, shutters, flower boxes, a cupola or weather vane.

Wooden sheds are sold as a kit and you can assemble it yourselves or hire someone to do it for you. Another option is to purchase a shed plan and build your own.
