Walkerton ON. Tainted water scandal, 2000.
Seven people died and around 2,300 fell ill when the town's water supply was contaminated with a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria. Stan and Frank Koebel, the brothers who ran Walkerton's water system, admitted during an inquiry that they had compromised the system's safety and then lied about it.

Caledonia ON. Native Standoff, 2006.
On 28 February, 2006 Natives occupied the Douglas Creek Estates development claiming that they are the rightful owners of this 40-hectare unfinished subdivision. Their claim stems from the Haldimand Proclamation, which in 1784 granted the Six Nations a large tract of land on either side of the Grand River to reward them for their loyalty to the British during the American Revolution (see Cayuga marker).
The developer, Henco Industries, said it had bought the parcel from the federal government. At the height of the confrontations the natives brought in heavy equipment and blocked two of the roads leading into Caledonia. There was an OPP raid and several violent clashes between natives and frustrated Caledonia residents.
As of today, 11 November, the negotiations have gone nowhere. The natives are still occupying the site. OPP cruisers are parked on Argyl Street South at the disputed land site and at a nearby hydro distribution station which was earlier vandalized leading to widespread blackouts in the Caledonia area.
The natives are from the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. Oshweken is the main village. |
