Right: Burlington Historical Society. 1946 Standpipe Information (01-05) "Burlington established a waterworks system in 1909. Wells had served homes and businesses until then. When water storage was needed for fire protection, a number of underground cement tanks were built at various places in 1896. In 1909 a municipal water tower* was built at Maria and John Streets." ("From Pathway to Skyway Revisited" by Claire Emery Machan) *Editors note: the correct name is standpipe. The standpipe provided the pressure needed to operate the system. At one time or another there were at least six privately owned water towers in Burlington. |
