Area Information: The Town of Moosonee is located on the west banks of the Moose River, a short 20 km's from the salt waters of the James Bay. The fur traders called the area "the moose". The Cree in turn called it Moosoneek meaning "at the moose". With the arrival of the railway the name Moosonee was appointed to the community in 1932. The train is the only land transportation to Moosonee. The only other option is to fly.
